FISHING DERBY

The Waterbury Stowe Fish and Game Club holds an annual kid’s fishing derby each spring free of charge and open to the public.  The fishing derby is held the Sunday before Memorial Day each May.

The lower pond at the club is stocked with hundreds of brook trout provided by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

RULES:

Anglers age 12 and under are divided into three age groups:

  • 5 and under
  • 6 to 8
  • 9 to 12.

Anglers are given two hours to fish.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The rules for anglers are simple:

  • Worms or other bait only – no lures
  • One rod/line per angler
  • Limit is three fish
  • All fish caught must be kept and entered – no releasing fish!

The expectations for parents are simple:

  • Tie knots
  • Bait hooks
  • Untie knots
  • Exemplify superior sportsmanship

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Fish can be checked in as soon as they are caught.

The lengths of all fish caught are recorded.

The top three anglers in each age group are awarded prizes based on the total length of fish caught.

Overall, there are prizes for the first fish checked in, the largest fish, and the smallest fish of the derby.

No angler can win more than one award per fishing derby.
